Chicago explores the allure of show business, featuring world-famous songs – notably “All That Jazzâ€� – alongside dazzling choreography and rousing dance numbers. On October 24, 2026, the classic musical Chicago by John Kander, Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse will premiere at Volksoper Wien. Director Lotte de Beer explores the mechanisms of the attention economy and examines how competing versions of a story come to be believed. After all, Chicago isn’t just about being seen — it’s about who gets to tell their own story. The musical direction is in the hands of the renowned British conductor and musical director Gareth Valentine, who has already worked on numerous productions in London’s West End, including with John Kander. Myrthes Monteiro plays Velma Kelly, Bettina Mönch stars as Roxie Hart, and Katia Ledoux takes on the role of “Mamaâ€� Morton. Together with Lionel von Lawrence as Billy Flynn, Jakob Semotan as Amos Hart, and a top-notch ensemble of musical theater singers, ballet dancers from the Vienna State Ballet, and chorus members, they bring the glamorous yet unsparing world of Chicago to the stage. FAME, AMBITION, AND THE TEMPTATIONS OF THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY Chicago in the 1920s: After her lover is murdered, the ambitious Roxie Hart ends up in a women’s prison. What at first seems like the end of her dreams opens up unexpected possibilities for her. She quickly realizes that in a world full of headlines, sensationalism, and public outrage, a crime can become a springboard to fame. In prison, Roxie meets the celebrated vaudeville performer and double murderer Velma Kelly, who has so far managed to keep the public’s attention on her side. A bitter rivalry develops between the two women over fame, influence, and the audience’s favor. They are supported by the shrewd prison warden “Mamaâ€� Morton, who knows how to skillfully turn every situation to her advantage. When the charismatic star attorney Billy Flynn takes on Roxie’s case, a perfectly orchestrated campaign begins. Together with the tabloid reporter Mary Sunshine, he turns the defendant into a public sensation. Suddenly, Roxie is the center of attention, while Velma is forced to watch as her own star threatens to fade. But in Chicago, attention is a fleeting commodity. No sooner has one scandal made its way onto the front pages than the next one is already waiting to capture the public’s curiosity. Amid court proceedings, media frenzy, and dramatic showstoppers, a story unfolds — as glamorous as it is scathing — about fame, ambition, and the power of public perception.
